It does not “look up the truth” the way a database does unless it is connected to tools like web search or your files. Most of the time, it is generating a plausible response from what it has learned and from what you provide in the conversation.
This is why prompting matters. Your prompt is not a “question” in the normal sense; it’s an instruction that steers the writing assistant. If you ask, “Help with my resume,” the assistant has to guess: what job, what experience level, what format, what tone, what constraints? But if you say, “Rewrite my bullet points for a data analyst role, keep them truthful, use metrics where available, and format as 6 bullets,” you have given it a job it can execute.
As engineering judgment, treat chat tools as strong at language work (drafting, rewriting, organizing, brainstorming) and weak at being a final authority. When the whiteboard fills up, older notes get erased. If an earlier fact disappears, the model may stop following it, contradict it, or “guess” to fill gaps.
This is engineering judgment: treat long sessions as fragile. If you are refining a resume or study plan over many turns, periodically “pin” the requirements by asking the AI to list the constraints it is following. If it lists the wrong constraints, correct them immediately. Doing so prevents slow drift—where the conversation gradually shifts away from your needs without you noticing.
Practical outcome: you can keep AI help consistent across multiple drafts by managing the context deliberately, rather than expecting perfect memory.
The most important limitation to understand early is that chat tools can produce hallucinations: statements that sound confident but are not supported by your input or by reliable sources. A practical technique is to label your context so the model can parse it: “My background: … Target role: … Input text: … Non-negotiables: …” This reduces misunderstandings and makes it easier to reuse the prompt as a template later.

Choose a format that matches your next step. If you need to compare options, ask for a table. If you need to execute, ask for a checklist. If you’re building a resume, ask for bullets that follow a specific pattern (Action + Scope + Result) and include a placeholder when a metric is missing.
Formatting also supports reuse. If you always ask for the same structure (e.g., “Draft / Rationale / Questions for me”), you can quickly scan and decide what to keep. A frequent mistake is asking for “a template” but not specifying fields—so you get a generic block of text. Instead, define headers, labels, and limits.
Finally, consider copy/paste friction: if you plan to put the output into a resume, ask for plain text bullets; if you need it in a spreadsheet, ask for CSV; if you need it for Notion, ask for Markdown headings. The right format is not cosmetic—it’s productivity.
